Falling, learning, rocks and safety nets

Falling down. Everyone does, what distinguishes is if and what we learn each time to make us better. To misquote Samuel Beckett “Fall once. Fall again. Fall better”

Rocks do not move, they stand the test of time, when storms come you can cling to them. You may cut yourself on them, you may bruise when you fall. They let you build on solid foundation.

Safety nets move, they catch you, they allow you to take risks you would not otherwise, they are temporary, they mean your mistakes cannot hurt you.

Engineering mindsets

Individuals and organisations can develop mindsets that hinder the evolution of product.
I personally believe that the correct mind set is to
  • ongoing honest evaluation of the merits and flaws of in-house and third-party technologies
  • agile utilization and promotion of good technologies and planned deprecation of bad  technologies
  • always have a plan B
  • balance engineering with sales with marketing
  • understanding the relationship of vision, milestones, releases, issues and tasks
Examples of mindset extremes that I believe to be equally counter-productive are
  • “Not invented here” vs “Standing on the shoulders of giants”
  • “Never ending redesign” vs “but we have always done it this way”
  • “Short-term agile” vs “Epic fixed projects”
  • “Monolithic Frankenstein” vs “Sprawling “

Housing Ideas

I suggest

a) Rename Council tax as “Property tax”

b) Tax second homes at ‘2’ times their council tax rate

c) As part of sale a house should always be reassessed for the purpose of council/property tax

Women covering thier faces

While watching bbc question time and the debate about women wearing veils, and hearing the two sides arguing whether it is about choice or forcing women to hide, I wonder how those sides would change if it was a debate about women feeling the need to wear make-up when they go out. Is it really right to consider legislating about one form of face covering but not another? #equality should mean having the right to be different, not the obligation to all be the same. If a woman does or doesn’t want to go out au natural isn’t that her choice? Regardless of whether that is a head covering or makeup?

Don’t ask a question if you don’t want the answer…

Politicians often make grat promises about representing the public when they want to get ellected, but one in power the public opinion can become more of a hindrance.

Who is the better leader or parent. One that does what’s best for his subjects/children or one that gives them whatever they ask for…

I guess i just wish politicians would be honest both before and after they get elected

Time goes faster as you get older

As the 1st of october clicked around i got to thinking about how the older i get the faster the years seem to fly by. I wonder if it is becase we compare thing to how long we have lived. For example when you are 4 then a single year seems to drag because its 25% of you life. But when you are age 25 a year is just 4% of your life, and when you reach 50 a year is even less at only 2% of ones memories. Maybe we measure time not by a fixed rule but against the scale of our life memories. So as we get older each passing year seems shorter.

Its half full not half empty

Empty is by definition zero,nothing,null,void.

So half empty is still empty – 0/2 =0

So while something can be half full, it can never ever be half empty.
